Together, Thin Blue Line UK and Thin Blue Line Denmark are helping officers rediscover hope, strength and purpose
When collaboration works, it can become a lifeline.
For many police officers living with the lasting effects of trauma, injury and PTSD, recovery can often feel isolating. Careers end, identities change, and the support networks that once surrounded them can suddenly seem out of reach.
That is why Thin Blue Line UK is proud to continue its longstanding partnership with Thin Blue Line Denmark, supporting UK officers to attend the annual Police Week in Denmark, a unique event centred on camaraderie, resilience, wellbeing and recovery.
This year's Police Week brought together almost 40 Danish officers alongside colleagues from the United Kingdom, whose travel had been funded by Thin Blue Line UK and made possible through the charities' incredible partnership with Thin Blue Line Denmark. All had faced significant physical or psychological challenges during their policing careers.
Through a programme of activities, including a football match, visits to the Danish Parliament and the British Embassy, sailing in central Copenhagen, treetop climbing, speedboat experiences, breath work, ice baths and sauna sessions, as well as wellness activities and cultural experiences, participants were given the opportunity to connect with others who truly understood their journey.
For former UK Police Detective Darren Ryan, the experience proved life-changing...
Darren was medically retired from policing in 2024 with Complex PTSD following years of dedicated service. Like many officers whose careers end through injury or illness, the transition from serving officer to civilian life was far from easy. Reflecting on his journey, Darren described reaching a point of crisis after retirement, "I hit crisis and nearly lost everything dear to me, including my own life. When I was medically retired, all I heard was silence. The noises inside my mind got louder. Life felt heavier every day. Keeping on living became difficult. I wasn't living, I was surviving".
"There was no retirement party. One day I was part of the family. The next, I was questioning who I was, where I belonged and what my life meant without the career that had defined so much of me".
Three years later, Darren says he was still struggling to find his place. Then came the opportunity to attend Police Week in Denmark.
What Darren discovered was far more than a week of activities. He joined 47 officers from different backgrounds, experiences and countries. Yet despite their differences, there was an immediate sense of understanding.
"We became friends. We became a support system. And we didn't always need to talk. Even in the silence, we heard one another. No words were needed. We got it".
Police Week is specifically designed to bring together officers who have experienced trauma, injury and life-changing events. For many attendees, it represents the first time they have spent prolonged periods alongside others who truly understand the challenges they face.
The result is a powerful environment where healing can begin, friendships can grow and confidence can be rebuilt.
For Thin Blue Line UK all of the trustees passionately agree that this experience remains one of the most impactful ways the charity can support officers facing some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
Tony a Trustee of Thin Blue Line UK said "As trustees, we see first-hand the challenges many officers face following injury, trauma, PTSD or medical retirement. What makes Police Week so special is that it provides something many people simply cannot find elsewhere, genuine understanding from peers who have walked a similar path.
By funding travel and creating a fair and supportive application process, we are able to remove barriers and give officers access to an opportunity that can genuinely change lives. Every year we hear stories of renewed confidence, lasting friendships and hope being restored. For Thin Blue Line UK, being able to support officers to attend Police Week is not simply funding a trip abroad; it's investing in recovery, wellbeing and the future of people who have dedicated their careers to protecting others".
Darren also spoke upon his return about the welcome he received by Lars Christensen and the entire Thin Blue Line Denmark team "Led by Lars Christensen, the team welcomed us like family. We were treated like royalty, but more importantly, we were treated with respect. For those whose careers had ended, their service was celebrated. For those still serving, they felt supported to keep going". For officers who often feel forgotten after retirement or injury, that recognition can be transformational.
"For all of us, it became something bigger than a week away. It was a celebration. A reminder, a recognition, a 'Thank you for your service'. Sometimes you don't realise how much you need to hear those words until someone finally says them".
Thin Blue Line UK's relationship with Thin Blue Line Denmark has grown over many years and remains one of the charity's most valued partnerships. Jack a Trustee of Thin Blue Line UK highlighted the significance of the bond between the two organisations and the difference it continues to make for officers year after year... "Our friendship with Thin Blue Line Denmark is something that all of us at Thin Blue Line UK treasure enormously. What began as a partnership has grown into a genuine friendship built on shared values, mutual respect and a common commitment to supporting police officers through some of the most challenging times in their lives. Police Week has become one of the most meaningful initiatives we support because we repeatedly witness the impact it has on those who attend. Officers leave Denmark with new friendships, renewed purpose and a support network that extends far beyond a single week".
For us as trustees, this is one of our most cherished partnerships. The dedication, compassion and generosity shown by our friends at Thin Blue Line Denmark continues to make an incredible difference to the lives of serving, retired and medically retired UK police officers every year. We are immensely proud to stand alongside them".
Darren believes his experience demonstrates what can happen when organisations work together to support those who have dedicated their lives to serving others, "I went to Denmark thinking I was joining a week with people who understood. I came home knowing I had found something much more powerful. Connection. Belonging. Friendship. A shared lifeline".
His message for officers considering applying in the future is simple... "If you are thinking about applying, I urge you to do it".
Stories like Darren's are exactly why Thin Blue Line UK continues to invest in initiatives such as Police Week.
Behind every application is an officer facing challenges that many will never see. Behind every place funded is an opportunity for someone to reconnect with themselves, rebuild confidence and realise they are not alone.
Every donation, fundraiser and supporter helps make experiences like this possible.
As Darren's story demonstrates, Police Week is about far more than activities or travel.
It is about restoring hope.
It is about recognising service.
It is about reminding officers that they remain part of the wider policing family, regardless of whether they are still serving, retired or medically retired. This is so important to every Trustee at Thin Blue Line UK who serves and volunteers their time to support the wider policing family right across the UK.
And above all, it demonstrates the extraordinary impact that can be achieved when charities, volunteers and officers come together across international borders with a shared commitment to supporting those who have served.
One story. A shared lifeline. Together as one policing family remember that you are stronger than you realise.
