Thin Blue Line UK initiative provides vital mental health support and recovery space for frontline officers

Serving and retired police officers from across the UK have taken part in a fully funded wellbeing retreat, thanks to an initiative led by the Thin Blue Line UK working in partnership with Bluelight Wellbeing.
The charity offered several sponsored places for officers to attend a Blue Light Wellbeing Retreat, with applications open nationwide. In addition to self‑applications, colleagues, friends, and family members were invited to nominate officers they believed would benefit from the experience.
The retreat took place from Friday the 24th April to Sunday the 26th April 2026 in a peaceful Cotswolds location. It was led by Hannah Bailey, founder of Blue Light Wellbeing, a former police officer who now works as a qualified therapist specialising in emergency services wellbeing, working alongside Tony who is a trustee of Thin Blue Line UK.
Designed as a two night, three‑day programme, the retreat provided a safe and supportive environment for participants to focus on their mental health. It aimed to give officers space to step away from the demands of policing, connect with others who understand its challenges, and develop tools to manage stress and trauma.
The programme included a range of activities focused on wellbeing and resilience, including...
🪷 Transformative SOMA breathwork sessions with Adam Bray.
🥭 Nourishing meals from Lexi’s Loving Spoonful.
🪵 Campfire connection and shared learning.
💦 A fully supported cold-water immersion experience.
🌿 Time in nature to relax, heal, and rebalance.
💙 A fun quiz night filled with laughter and community.
Heather, one of the attendees, said “I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I arrived at the retreat, and what I experienced was more than I could have imagined. I’ve never done something like this before. Hannah was so warm and welcoming from the moment I arrived and completely put me at ease. The retreat programme was well balanced... I would highly recommend this to anyone in the blue light family who is in need of support and R&R”.
Another participant, Chloe, described the retreat as arriving at exactly the right moment in her life “Attending this retreat came at a time when I truly needed it most… I arrived feeling emotionally exhausted, mentally overwhelmed, and physically drained. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, safe, and able to slow down and breathe again. I left feeling lighter, more grounded, and more emotionally balanced than I have in a long time”. Chloe added “The retreat reminded me of the importance of prioritising my own wellbeing… I have come away with a renewed sense of clarity, inner calm, and resilience, thank you Thin Blue Line UK”.
Jeanette emphasised the importance of connection within policing “It allows connection, a reminder that we’re not alone… This retreat can truly be lifesaving and has made me realise that I am still important and I matter”.
Greame described the retreat as “A wonderful experience thank you Thin Blue Line UK, that provided the mental space that was needed whilst also showing how to deal and process my problems”.
Sue also reflected on the impact of the weekend and the atmosphere created by the charity and organisers “From the moment I arrived, nervous and not quite knowing what to expect, I felt completely welcome… What you created was a space where a group of strangers could show up, be honest, be messy, be human, and feel completely safe”. Sue added “It didn’t feel like a programme being delivered at us. It felt like being held… I came home exhausted in the best possible way — peaceful, reset, and full”.
When asked if anything could be improved, Sue responded “Genuinely? I can’t find a single thing… What I got was beyond anything I could have imagined… you got it absolutely right”.
Gary, a trustee and the founder of of Thin Blue Line UK, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative “These retreats are truly magical and provide vital support for officers on the front line who are working in incredibly challenging circumstances. The feedback we’ve received clearly reflects the growing need for dedicated wellbeing support within the emergency services, particularly given the pressures faced by both serving and retired officers. We are incredibly grateful that this retreat was made possible through our partnership with Bluelight Consultancy Ltd, whose sponsorship enabled us to fund these places. Our hope is to continue expanding access to similar retreats in the future, ensuring that more officers have the opportunity to rest, recover, and reconnect".
Thin Blue Line UK has previously delivered similar retreats and says it remains committed to building on this work. The charity plans to organise further retreats and similar wellbeing experiences in the coming months, with the aim of supporting even more officers and providing ongoing opportunities for rest, recovery, and connection.
