Thin Blue Line UK has pledged its full support to an appeal launched by Cleveland Police Federation following the tragic deaths of Cleveland Police officers PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough. The charity, which provides mental health and wellbeing support to members of the blue light community, has joined colleagues from across the country in paying tribute to the two officers while encouraging continued support for their families.

The appeal has already raised more than £702,000, highlighting the extraordinary generosity, compassion and solidarity shown by the policing family and wider public in the wake of the tragedy. Police Constable Matthew Blades and Police Constable Tom Clough were among seven people who lost their lives following a fatal collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough. The incident occurred at approximately 03:39hrs when a Volkswagen Passat, reportedly travelling the wrong way along the dual carriageway with five occupants believed to be in their late teens, collided with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle. The devastating loss has deeply affected colleagues across Cleveland Police and the wider policing community, with tributes continuing to pour in for two officers remembered for their dedication to public service and community protection.

Paying tribute to the fallen officers, Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described Matthew and Tom as officers who served with courage and commitment; she said "It is an incredibly sad day for Cleveland. No one should leave their home and not return safely. These were brave officers protecting our communities and serving our residents, who didn't return home to their families at the end of their shift".

All funds raised will be used for the benefit of the families of PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, helping to provide support during an unimaginably difficult period. The overwhelming response demonstrates the strength of the policing family, with officers, staff, supporters and members of the public coming together to honour the memory of two colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their community.

Alongside encouraging donations, Thin Blue Line UK is reminding members of the emergency services community that support remains available for anyone who may be struggling with the emotional impact of recent events. The charity continues to provide confidential mental health and wellbeing support to members of the blue light family and is encouraging people to seek help if they need it.
