Powerful words born from a life-changing wellbeing retreat
Heather, a serving police officer has shared a heartfelt poem about the realities of policing after attending a fully funded wellbeing retreat which was funded and arranged by Thin Blue Line UK. Sometimes the true impact of a wellbeing retreat is not fully realised until long after the weekend has ended. For Heather the retreat provided her the opportunity to pause, reflect and begin a journey of reconnection and healing at a crucial point in her life.
The wellbeing retreat, arranged by Thin Blue Line UK in partnership with Hannah Bailey of Blue Light Wellbeing, offered participants dedicated time, space and support away from the pressures of frontline policing. Hannah is a psychotherapist specialising in Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT), a trauma therapist and a wellbeing coach.
Following the programme, officer Heather contacted organisers to explain just how transformative the experience had been. Inspired by the retreat and the support she received, Heather wrote a powerful poem titled Policing Needs You, which she has now chosen to share with the wider policing family.
The poem reflects on the emotional highs and lows of police work, the importance of camaraderie among colleagues, and the resilience required to face challenging situations on a daily basis. It also highlights the unique bond shared between officers and the vital role they play in supporting people during some of the darkest moments of their lives.
Through verses that acknowledge both the hardships and rewards of the profession, Heather pays tribute to the friendships forged in policing and the strength officers draw from one another. The poem also recognises the value of humour as a coping mechanism and encourages officers to remember the positive difference they make, even when faced with self-doubt.
Jack a Trustee of Thin Blue Line UK said "We are incredibly honoured to work with Hannah and her team at Blue Light Wellbeing. What Hannah is able to offer is truly life changing and special. Time and again, we hear from officers who have attended the retreats, and they often describe the positive and long-lasting impact the experience has had on their wellbeing, both personally and within work too. The feedback we receive reinforces just how important it is to create safe spaces where officers can step away from the pressures of policing, reflect, recharge and focus on their own wellbeing. Seeing officers like Heather find strength, inspiration and renewed purpose through these experiences makes us immensely proud to be able to continue offering and supporting these retreats".
One of the poem's key messages is the reminder that policing remains more than simply a job for many officers...
"Policing is a vocation, it's a way of life," Heather writes, before concluding with a powerful message of encouragement:
"Policing needs officers, who are just like you;
To do what you're doing, the way that you do."
Thin Blue Line UK is honoured to share Heather's words and believes her poem will resonate with many current and former officers who understand both the challenges and rewards of serving communities. The charity continues to place officer wellbeing at the heart of its work and has recently closed applications for another fully funded Wellbeing Retreat taking place in 2027. The charity has also met earlier this year with Oscar Kilo to let them know more about the wellbeing retreats they offer and fund to enable the National Police Wellbeing Service to consider adopting and offering similar retreats for police forces across England and Wales.
Tony a Trustee of Thin Blue Line UK said "It is thanks to the generosity, commitment and ongoing support of our incredible fundraisers and supporters which makes it possible for Thin Blue Line UK to fund these retreats and once again look to be able to offer further opportunities during 2027 for serving and retired officers to attend further wellbeing retreats".
The charity added that it feels extremely fortunate to receive such unwavering support, enabling it to continue investing in initiatives that help officers take time to reflect, recover and prioritise their wellbeing. The continued backing of fundraisers across the policing community and beyond ensures that these life-changing retreats can reach those who need them most.
For many, Heather's story serves as a powerful reminder that sometimes a few days of dedicated wellbeing support can have an impact that lasts far beyond the retreat itself. Those interested in future wellbeing opportunities are encouraged to follow Thin Blue Line UK's social media channels for updates and announcements.
Heather's moving poem, Policing Needs You, captures the challenges, sacrifices and sense of purpose that define a career in policing. We are honoured to share her words in full below...
Policing Needs You
Being in the police, it isn’t all bad;
Sometimes you’ll be happy, sometimes you’ll be sad.
You’ll laugh and you’ll cry, until you can’t anymore.
Sometimes it’s a pleasure, sometimes it’s a chore.
Colleagues become family, and your closest friends;
Your trust in each other, it never ends.
There to support you, they’ll have your back;
To hold you together, should you start to crack.
Gallows humour helps get you all through;
The toughest of jobs, that make you feel blue.
It may seem morbid; it may appear crass;
But often it’s needed, so you don’t shatter like glass.
The laughs that you share, in between shouts;
Make it easier to deal, with any self-doubts.
You’re in it together, through thick and through thin;
You can’t let the haters get under your skin.
The people you help, they do not forget;
That you’ve done your best, right from the outset.
You listened, you cared, you've worked so damned hard;
You gave it your all, you went the extra yard.
The support you provide, in their darkest time;
The work that you do, to investigate crime;
The time that you offer, to give them a voice;
The way you explain that they do have a choice.
You have done your job well; you’ve done it right;
You should be so proud, keep that in sight.
Remember that feeling if you're ever unsure;
Let it help you to feel, just a little more secure.
Policing is a vocation, it’s a way of life,
Crime won’t go away; it will always be rife.
Policing needs officers, who are just like you;
To do what you’re doing, the way that you do.
